The storage of scuba diving gear offers several difficulties that need to be overcome. Some of these difficulties include the heightened risk of corrosion, the weight of the diving vests/other underwater gear, and the speed at which wet gear will dry inside a cupboard. Keeping these challenges in mind, our designers and production team came together to work out two new, Australian made scuba gear storage cupboards that could handle the workload.

Making the Necessary Changes to Create Scuba Gear Storage Cupboards

Being that we needed additional strength, corrosion resistance, and size we made the following product changes:

• Increased airflow
• MetaPrep Primer Coat to encapsulate the steel
• Stainless steel accessories
• Bigger size – 1800H x 900W x 700D
• Reinforced shelving

Increasing Airflow = Less Moisture In The Cupboard

Normally, ventilation is limited to the doors or rear of the cupboard. For the scuba gear storage cupboard, we opted for top ventilation to allow evaporating moisture to rise uninhibited. Less moisture = less time for rust to take hold.

MetaPrep Primer Stops Rust Before it Begins

MetaPrep Primer from Interpon is designed to reduce the occurrence and severity of corrosion. Unlike standard powder coats, MetaPrep Primer adheres to both the steel and the adjacent paint molecules. This pre-coat fully encapsulates the steel keeping out harmful moisture and oxygen. Metaprep can be used in conjunction with any colour.

Stainless Steel Hanging Rail: Strength, Durability and Style

Using a stainless steel hanging rail satisfied two requirements. It is strong enough to bear the weight of diving suits whilst simultaneously being immune to rust.

Bigger than Normal Cupboards, Fits Dive Suits Easily

To accommodate the scuba gear, we increased the depth of our cupboards from 450mmD to a whopping 700mmD. This allows for the easy hanging of wet suits and dive suits.

Reinforced Shelves: No Flex

There were two types of scuba gear storage cupboards requested. One for hanging dive suits, and one for scuba gear. We reinforced the shelving with welded stiffeners, and installed them on welded shelf brackets. These shelves aren’t going anywhere!

Antimicrobial products are in high demand and it’s no wonder why. It’s no secret that concern over workplace hygiene is rising at the same pace as incidents of hygiene related issues. A News.com article from last year reported that $90.4 million of productivity was lost due to sick days, caused just by the Flu or Flu-like viruses. According to Brett Mitchell, the Chair of a NHMRC committee revising national infection control guidelines,

Around 165,000 Australians contract infections in hospitals around the country every year, a study has found.

Antimicrobial Lockers are set to be one piece of the hygiene puzzle, contributing to a reduction in cross contamination risk.

Why do Healthcare Facilities Need Antimicrobial BioCote® Treated Lockers and Storage?

Surfaces such as lockers, storage cupboards, and other items are touched by both staff and patients. Antimicrobial Technology is effective against a wide spectrum of microbes: this includes bacteria, mould, fungi and even viruses. Antibacterial Technology, on the other hand, is only effective against bacteria.

What this means for Statewide lockers, cupboards, and other storage products is that when supplied with BioCote treated powdercoat, the products will in fact be actively fighting against bacterial, microbes and mould. How Can Silver Based Antimicrobial BioCote treated lockers be used by Health Care facilities, gyms, schools and other workplaces?

A locker is touched by multiple patients and staff on a daily basis, which can potentially transfer germs and expose patients to contagions. If a surface is antimicrobial, it can help reduce bacteria and microbes on the locker and limit patients’ contact with dangerous microorganisms. Statewide Office Furniture recognised the antimicrobial efficacy of the Interpon powder coating and applied it to their newest product, the antimicrobial hygienic lockers. This 6 drawer cabinet is a testament to the technical skills of the Statewide Production Manager, John. While not immediately obvious from the image, these drawers were longer and narrower then any previously designed drawer fronts. In order to achieve the width, the drawers were fitted with a stiffener and were made using thicker steel in order to minimise the risk of distortion or “racking”. The drawers are fitted with 300mm brushed stainless steel handles to allow for a smooth open, every time.

We also made this nifty 4 drawer in a mobile version to match.

… And finally, the colour choice is fantastic. The body is White Satin (the standard Statewide white powder coat option) and the drawers are Signal Red. You can see the colour choices  here on the colour page.

The world of Powder Coat is surprisingly technical and full of innovation. Recently in a meeting with the powder coat manufacturer Interpon, Statewide was shown the new Interpon Textura powder coat which is actually a superior product when it comes to resisting markings that result from frequent use of the products it coats.

Michael, the General Manager at Statewide Office Furniture made this statement about why the company has adopted the Interpon Textura technology to their paint lineup.

“Textura has been promoted for use in architectural applications such as fencing, door frames and window frames. It made sense to us at Statewide that consumers would be interested in this kind of technology to protect heavy use products like end of journey or public access lockers, in cupboards and shelving units that get used every day in busy work environments, or even in tambour cupboards that are used as room dividers in open plan office spaces.”

Interpon Textura is available from Statewide in 4 different and popular colours. Textura Black, Monument, White and Deep Ocean. While your computer screen probably isn’t the best representation of the colour, Statewide is working on sample swatches now for distribution.

As you can see, Interpon Textura has a fine ripple effect which is much more subtle than the standard “ripple” effect that is very common in the world of office storage products. This contributes to it’s strength against rubs, scratches and other types of markings that are common in high traffic environments. In fact, it actually out performs standard ripple finishes in anti-mar tests. While there is an extra cost involved when ordering from the Interpon Textura range, this cost is easily weighed against the extra durability the powder coat will have.

3 Door Lockers in RAL Certified Colours

The lockers so nice we added it to our homepage.

Are you familiar with RAL Classic certification? We weren’t either, until this order came through. RAL is a European standard developed in Germany to help professionals communicate exactly what colours they are using. For example, an architect can let an interior designer know the exact colour they are using for the windows panes without having to provide them a sample of the colour. It’s used for powder coating as well and in the case of these lockers, were chosen based on the specific colour requirements of the business.

In fact, this picture has been such a hit that several customers have since asked us to recreate the combination. They love the flow of greens and blues which is really calming in the office space. What really sets it off is the dual colours of each individual lockers. Using a white body with the coloured doors was a stroke of genius.

In some cases the users are asked to buy their own padlock. This has its pros and cons. Yes, it’s cheaper and requires minimal management, but then a lost key or a resigned staff member means the trusty bolt cutters are needed in order to access the locker they were using. Sometimes, the workplace or “owner” of the lockers supply the padlocks, but then the cost of the inevitable replacements will surely start to add up. Statewide has decided to tackle this problem pragmatically, and we have brought two new padlocks into our range that tackle the logistical issues that users face when dealing with potentially hundreds of padlocks in a workplace.

The Heavy Duty Padlock with Master Key Override and Barrel Exchange Option

The first in the new padlock lineup is known as the Heavy Duty Padlock. It a sturdy little beast made of zinc alloy with a chrome finish. The shackle is 8mm hardened steel. The beauty of this padlock is that you can buy a master key that will open any of the padlocks that you purchase of the range. The benefit of this should be obvious. No more destroyed padlocks just because a staff member forgets to bring in their keys that day! Any admin or authorised individual can open the padlock. There are also security benefits to this. For example, in a school setting where a teacher may need to access a locker for an Epi-Pen or simply to do a locker inspection, the master key will enable this without needing the students personal key.

The second optional feature of this padlock is the barrel exchange option. This truly sets the lock apart from other padlocks, as in the event that the locker user leaves without returning keys or the keys are lost, you will be able to replace the barrel of the padlock instead of the entire padlock. Even though this is a fantastic upgrade, there is no additional cost to this feature other than the cost of purchasing new barrels, which in a corporate or large locker environment, most people would buy extra in preparation anyway. Imagine needing a new lock and having no down time on the changeover! It does need a barrel exchange key to remove the old barrel and insert the new one, but this would be stored next to your master key.

Pros:

• Strong and attractive body.
• Non-destructive ways of opening the lock (barrel exchange key or master key).
• Won’t need replacing if user loses the keys, if barrel exchange option is selected.
• Fits the Statewide flush mount locks and standard latch locks.
• Affordable
• Easy key management.
• Can stock up on extra barrels if forward thinking.

Cons:

• Generally requires the business who owns the lockers to also purchase the padlocks which may otherwise have been an expense put onto the locker users.

The next padlock from Statewide Office Furniture is the sleek, black combination padlock with master key override. This lock is filled with features you would expect from a quality padlock. A 6.3mm hardened steel shackle, 4 dial combination, tool-free user changeable combination, and of course the ability to unlock the padlock in the event of a forgotten combination with the override key.

But what are features, if they aren’t translated into benefits for the user?

The 4 dial combination means there are 10,000 possible combinations (well, 9999 but let’s not get technical). This is superior to 3 dial combination locks with only 1000 possible combinations. Takes a lot longer for a nefarious individual to crack into this lock!

The tool-free code changing makes changing the code a breeze. Once in the unlock position, the user can change the code at will, an unlimited amount of times.

The fact that it’s a combination lock means that there are NO KEYS FOR THE USER. NONE. The only key for this little padlock is the master key. There will be no padlock replacements, no barrel replacements, and no key replacements. The master key can sit in a drawer or a safe until such a time as it’s needed.

Pros:

• Aside from the master key/s, there is no key management required.
• Strong and durable lock.
• Fits the Statewide flush mount latch and standard latch locks.
• 4 dials make cracking the code take a lot longer than cheaper 3 dial options.
• Tool-free user changing means there is no time wasted on site setting new codes for new users or helping existing users change the codes.

Cons:

• Slightly more costly than normal padlocks, due to the mechanics of it.
• Lead times currently are a bit longer as they are supplied to order. This may change in the future depending on customer requirements!
